Childhood & Special Ed Degree from Pace University
T1. Are classes conducted in a frum setting?
YES, classes are separate for women and men and our structures are well-versed in the needs of our community.
2. When can I start?
REGISTER NOW TO HOLD YOUR SPOT FOR September 2021 ENROLLMENT! Programs begin every January and September.
3. How often are classes?
Classes are held once weekly, currently on Monday evenings from 5:30pm - 9:30pm.
4. Do I attend classes in person?
Yes.... classes are in person. We expect September to be in-person. However, because of the Covid pandemic, classes are now being conducted online. Pace University campuses will reopen when it is safe to do so.
5. Do I need to graduate before I can start working in Special Education?
No, you are eligible to begin working upon successful completion of 21 credits (half the Pace degree program) and if you’ve met the criteria to earn an Internship Certificate. Material will be explained in detail by your professors at the right time.
6. Can I use my teaching assistant experience to fulfill my student teaching requirement?
Yes, if certain criteria is met. Keep in mind, the role of a student teacher and the role of teaching assistant are different. In order to complete student teaching, a teaching assistant must be freed up from their ordinary duties to fulfill the obligations of student teaching. Student teaching takes place during the 2nd and final year of the program. Student teaching requirements include but are not limited to lesson planning, providing direct instruction to the whole class, working with students in small groups, attending teacher conference days and communicating with parents. Over this 14 week period students must be able to assume all the duties of a classroom teacher.
7. Can I complete my student teaching requirement in a Jewish school?
Yes, student teaching can be completed in several types of schools, including Yeshiva, public, private Seminary and parochial. Student teaching placement must be pre-approved by the Pace University Director of School Partnerships.
8. What grade level does my field experiences and/or observations need to be in?
Teacher observation hours must be completed in Childhood birth - 2nd grade, congruent with this degree program. Some of those hours must be completed in a setting that serves students with disabilities (inclusive classroom, resource room, self-contained setting). PACE will guide you.
9. May I complete my field experience observations and student teaching over the summer?
It is possible to complete field observations over the summer depending on the summer school curriculum and setting. Placement must be pre-approved by the Pace University Director of School Partnerships. However, student teaching cannot be completed over the summer.
